  About Chainsaw Art
~ Artists differ in their mediums of choice, but the results are universal. A finished piece is admired and used to accentuate or compliment our surroundings. Although chainsaw art is generally associated with rustic decor, its popularity has been crossing those boundaries and it is now found in museums and homes and offices across the country. Recognizing the artist's talent and their ability to reach deep inside us and generate feelings of awe and appreciation is part of what makes art - art. No one does this better than an sculptor wielding a motorized chain saw.

The art of chainsaw carving is a rural folk art that combines the raw power of a chainsaw with the artistic finesse of fine carving. Originating in the Pacific Northwest, chainsaw carving now attracts interest from all over the world. Chainsaw artists compete in national and regional competitions, where they show off the skill and strength needed to create a work of art from a chunk of firewood. Using a tool that most consider the very epitome of utility and destruction, our artist creates whimsical, friendly chainsaw art that will add a touch of country charm to any home.

  Joe Bathon – The Artist

Hi, My name is Joe Bathon and I'm located in the St Louis, Missouri area and have been creating chainsaw carvings for about three years now. The reason that I really enjoy creating chainsaw carvings is that there are no restrictions as to what you are able to create once you decide on a particular log.

Many customers ask, do you use a picture or a sketch before you start carving a future piece of art? Most of the time I really don’t, I have to see the image in the log which helps me then know where I want to start carving on the log.

Some of the tools of my trade :

  • various size chainsaws
  • hand held grinders
  • wire brush
  • chaps
  • safety glasses
  • propane torch
Some of the finish materials I use are assorted color stains and add a topcoat of satin or gloss finish, depending on the customers request.

Because I love to use Acrylic paints on my canvas art, I also incorporate them on my carvings as well which opens another door of creativity and color.

One other process I like to use on my carvings is burning the wood with a propane torch and then use a hand held wire brush to knock off the excess burnt wood. By brushing the wood after its burned it creates a very nice softer look for the fur on a bear or whatever the carving may be.

While taking a look at my website, keep in mind birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, Christmas or just that hard to buy for person in general. I can help you with all of your shopping needs. So, whether it's a cute and cuddly indoor decoration, or a large realistic lawn or deck ornament (they fit-in almost anywhere), we can make it for you!
